Ifa & Physiology

The physical body is the vessel that channels spirituality and emotional processes which consist of vibratory energy fields that overlap and greatly affect one another.

Ori literally translates to mean 'head' in Yoruba culture, however, the spiritual connotations of the word are quite profound. Ori is consciousness housed in the physical head. And it conjoins us with Eledumare, the omnipotent supreme force. And it is Obatala, the Oriá¹£a responsible for molding the human heads, and thusly individual consciousness....

With respect to internal physiological processes, according to Ifa sickness manifests in the body due to lack of internal balance, which in turn causes decreased harmony within the body. And in most cases, imbalances are due to over-indulgence. Good health is achieved by maintaining moderation between overindulgence and deprivation. The idea of optimal health in Ifa means we must put forth constant effort to maintain a balance between our Ori (Head), Okan (Heart) inner self and physical environment.

Onisegun, herbalist, and Oloogun, are just a few titles used to describe Yoruba traditional medical practitioners/physicians. Who, along with the Ifa priest's, play a major role in healing within the community. The Oloogun, in addition to evaluating symptoms of their patients, look for the spiritual or emotional causes of the disease to appease the malevolent forces (Ajogun).

  • What role does the Onisegun have in maintaining physiological balance?
